User Engagement and Quality – A Game Designer’s Perspective

Presenter: Alex Sala, Owner and Game Design Lead at Armchair Games

Game and App designers rely on a variety of strategies to ensure a quality product, but perhaps the most critical area of analysis for these types of software are quality of user engagement and user experience. In any interactive software application, we encounter not only the need to ensure quality of function, but also to achieve a desired response from our users. In this discussion we will examine a game designer’s perspective on the benefits of this kind of quality testing, as well as general process ideas. Finally, we will discuss how this kind of quality assurance can be applied to any other software project, to improve both the desired user response, and user satisfaction with the product.

About the Speaker:
Alex Sala is Owner and Game Design Lead at Armchair Games, a startup studio focused on bringing a hybrid development approach to the video game industry, as well as engaging players in new and creative styles of play. Armchair Games supports its hybrid style with its own quality strategies, with the eventual goal of a center for quality based in Tokyo, Japan.

Prior to his involvement in the software industry, Alex worked in the world of professional sportscar racing, filling roles from mechanic to engineer, coach and driver. After learning operations in this highly competitive, complex-systems focused environment, Alex now applies this to the design and development of performance software.
